Such is life manuscript fragments, circa 1897.

The collection contains photocopies of selected pages from manuscript and edited typescript drafts for Furphy's novel, Such is Life, a fictional account of the life of rural dwellers, including bullock drivers, squatters and itinerant travellers, in southern New South Wales and Victoria, during the 1880s. Also includes a few typescript pages that became Rigby's Romance and O'Flaherty's Troubles. Includes a photocopied inventory of the manuscript pages corresponding to pages in the typescript and noting which were not published, and typescript pages corresponding to page numbers in the book.

Joseph Furphy, the writer, was born at Yering, near Yarra Glen. He is best known for Such is life (1903) published under the pen-name 'Tom Collins'.
